Last night after dinner, Junior was racing around the living room when he suddenly announced, "I need to use the potty!"
Chuck scooped him up and plopped him down on his special chair. I thought, holy moly, this is it: the end of diapers. Chuck and I waited patiently as Junior looked around the kitchen.
"Junior? Are you—"
"—I NEED A BOOK! I NEED A BOOK!"
Yep, Dad's been doing potty time. One Dune book at a time.

I would like to think a book is better than announcing he needs his blackberry.
I often wonder how many Facebook statuses are thought up while the owner is sitting on the shitter.
Hey, whatever gets him going!
ha! Aw, come on.. we all have a poop post once in awhile.
yay - hope you are well on your way to being diaper free. and you better buy some reading material.
That is just too cute! Too good not to share!
I agree - this was far too good not to share!! It is good to see that books are working. A girlfriend of mine - a mother of 3 - gave me this idea. The babe isn't anywhere close to potty training, but I'm definitely going to use it when the time comes. Her advice is this:
Pump the kiddo with as many M&Ms as s/he wants...whenever s/he wants. They will still need to eat real food, but if an M&M is requested - give it. Keep doing this for a week. Then, put the M&Ms in a clear glass jar in a location that is eye level...and stop giving M&Ms. The only way the kiddo gets an M&M is if s/he uses the potty - and not just sits on it, but actually goes.
She swears by it and did it for all 3 of her kids.

Come on by, stay for a while and leave a comment or two!!
That is cute.
If he's reading and pooping on the potty, all the better. Many a man got his education while sitting pretty, so to speak.
Forgiven.
Although that strategy is going to suck when you guys go out for dinner. Trust me, I've lived it.
Hmm...this is somehow bad? An early book habit, even if it is on the toilet, is a GOOD thing.
Was he puffin' while he was poopin'?
The world wants to know....
oh oh that's great! now you can almost say good buy to Dollars for Diapers
Nice! Growing up in true boy fashion. Great job Chuck and keep up the hard work Junior.
I love it when kids read on the potty. It's to adorable!
(Heh, Lindy! I totally update my FB status while in the bathroom.) :)
Those damn DUNE books have been in my bathroom for 32 years - because I've been married that long to a DUNE fan. He suggestged I read them, but all that sand freaks me out.
It's not a bad thing at all, although I was concerned with the urgency of his "I need a book!" As if one cannot perform on the potty without it.
Pricilla, he puffed as soon as he pooped!
Common first-time parent mistake. Ditch the potty chair, unless you've managed to connect it to your sewer system. You do realize you have to manually clean that thing, right? Also, good job putting Chuck in charge. The school teachers wanted to teach my youngest to sit for #1, and he told the teachers that his Dad said "Pansies sit to pee!" That's my boy!
Oh, @ Lindy - every one of mine!
He looks really focused.
AHAHAHA! Love it! It does start young... ;)
be grateful he hasn't asked for a Blackberry or laptop!! Just sayin'!!!
that is awesome
So, I am contemplating posting a pic of my little girl going in the woods. You are inspiring me. Maybe it won't harm her or me... :D
