V Day recap. Enter at your own risk

I hate Valentine's Day. I don't need a calendar to tell me when I should get all googly over my husband. Nonetheless, after weeks of seeing everyone's cherubic treats, I started to have delusions of culinary prowess (I swear, it comes on like PMS lately).

So after dinner last night I made this for my luv4ever man:

If it's not glaringly obvious from the photo, it's an angel food cake. Light and fluffy my ass. The thing had so many rolls it folded into itself. I didn't even coat it with anything. I just served it dry and crusty to my husband. If you're wondering if he ate it, the answer is no. Our pet raccoons did.

Thankfully we have our love on which to binge and multiply. And the good news is that the bar for next year is very low. Like, in the basement low.

First of all, I adore your blog and your sense of humor! Second of all I actually think your cake turned out fine as far as the baking part. Did you invert the pan with the cake in it onto the neck of say a ketchup bottle until it was completely cool? Most of the time it is sneaky little steps like that cause cooking and baking flops.

OMG, this is the funniest thing I've read in a long time! This totally looks like something that would happen to me, that's why I've given up cooking.

Dude, angel food cakes are HARD. You really did set the bar high. Lucky raccoon.

I just went with the traditional "sex" as a V-Day gift.

Wow...that's a supremely interesting angel food cake. I thought it was pancakes!!

I've never been able to master one of those, so you're not alone.

Happy V-Day! We don't do anything either....like really, nothing.

That cake is truly a thing of unrivaled beauty, really awe inspiring. Wow! Can you send me the recipe? I need to do something nice for my husband too.

Keely, my husband would like you to write a book about the correct way to celebrate V Day. Apparently it's only one sentence: Have sex.

Thank you, everyone, for your encouraging words. The cake sucked but you really tried to paint it in a flattering light. LOL.

That's exactly how mine would of looked too! It's the thought that counts!

That is a lovely, er, um, thought. I did recognize what it was from the photo. My mother wasn't a great baker so I have probably met the same cake personally. I hope the raccoons enjoyed.

LOL...at first glance I thought it was pancakes....next time you'll just buy one right???

That's the way. Keep those expectations low. Though you can't really use an Angel Food Cake as the bar. Those are the hardest of the whole cake genre. I try to stick with the tried and true sex. You really can't go wrong.

That looks friggin awesome. So sorry the coons got to it, it looks like it would have been mighty tasty, hope you had a good v-day anyway!

Hah, that's how my cooking usually turns out.

Which is basically why we buy all our baked goods now. It's just easier that way.

I really doesn't matter what it looks like, it maters what it tastes like. So er, I'm sure the raccoons LOVED it.

I agree with Keely, sex is the way to go. Even if you do it wrong, men are just happy they got laid! And it' free, unless of course you get knocked up and have to spend thousands of dollars to raise another child.....

That's hilarious. A for effort 'tho - I get my cakes from Safeway.

For the life of me I could not figure out what that was. And plain angel food cake? If you had topped it with strawberries and whipped cream it would have disguised the inverted nature of the cake.

It's totally the thought that counts. And I think there are plenty of thoughts to be had about that cake, for sure!

Keep the love alive. Next year, go to the bakery :)

Oh, that's funny! Like MadWoman said, at first glance I thought it was a pile of pancakes... It's the thought that counts though, right? :) I especially like how the bar is set low for next year - hmmm...might have to think about 're-setting' that bar over here, too! ;)

The cake's not inverted Renee. It upchucked on itself. But thanks for skating over its ugliness--that was sweet.

I love the pancake comments!
